Chip and Pete Shafer grew up in Endicott, NY, a Southern Tier town where their father worked at the Endicott-Johnson shoe factory and later at IBM. In 1973, their family started Nanticoke Gardens — a garden center specializing in bedding plants, poinsettias, and hanging baskets. By 2011, the brothers had taken over the operation and turned it into the area’s premier grower.
When New York opened adult-use cannabis, the transition was natural. In 2017, Nanticoke partnered with Binghamton University to grow hemp, eventually providing over a million clones and half a million seed starts to NY farmers. By May 2022, they had their adult-use cultivation license. The same greenhouses that grew annuals and perennials for decades now grow some of New York’s most popular cannabis strains.
They didn’t start a cannabis company. They grew into one. Fifty years of horticultural expertise, one family, one location. That’s the kind of brand we put on our shelves.
